The easiet way to tell if the screen is damaged are as follows, it is pretty obvious if the screen is cracked and damaged as this will show up as just black spots and a visible crack on the screen. The screen may also not come on at all if it is damaged, they can also display funny coloured lines and strange symbols etc if the screen is damaged.
